madison moore on Being Fabulous
Join us as cultural critic, academic and DJ madison moore delivers a performative presentation on how we use style and creativity in everyday life as a form of expression – and in an often unwelcoming world.
What does it mean to be fabulous? How seriously can we consider the place of the beautiful eccentric? Is fabulous style only about narcissism and selfies or is it a defiant statement to the struggles of everyday living?
The way we present ourselves offers an insight into who we are and how we want to interact with the world. Unfortunately – for a variety of superficial reasons – others are always liable to come to quick and simplistic decisions about who we are. All too often, their judgment doesn’t quite get us right. Style provides us with a major opportunity to correct some of those assumptions and misconceptions.
Drawing on his book Fabulous: The Rise of The Beautiful Eccentric (Yale University Press, 2018), madison moore uses autobiography, cultural analysis and ethnography to position fabulousness as a form of cultural criticism, allowing those who adopt it to thrive in an otherwise marginalising world.
Join us at this special Melbourne-only event as we explore the possibilities of self-expression and celebrate our fabulous differences – dressed accordingly of course.
